Should I get a Dehumidifier?

|

Warm weather has returned to Michigan and that means something else is about to return, too: humidity. No one likes feeling sticky and sweaty all the time (especially when you’re in the comfort of your home). But here at Baumann & DeGroot, we know the solution: dehumidifiers. A dehumidifier removes the moisture from the air, helping prevent the growth of mold and mildew. If you’re unsure whether a dehumidifier is right for you, we’re here with a handy set of questions that will help make your decision easier.

Does your home have a musty odor?

This could be a sign that mold is growing in your home. Actively growing mold releases musty smells. These spores can trigger allergic reactions for those who have asthma and can act as irritants for otherwise healthy individuals. A dehumidifier can help reduce the moisture that is assisting the mold grow.

Does your basement feel damp?

This is a sign that your basement has high humidity. Most homes will often be more humid in their basement than on other levels of the home. Even if your home has an HVAC system, cool air can become trapped on your lower level and increase the humidity level.

Is there condensation on your windows?

Condensation on your windows is a sign that your home is too humid. This phenomenon occurs during winter months when the outside temperatures are colder than inside ones. Humidity will condense into water droplets when it hits the cold windows.

Is your food growing stale or moldy faster than it should?

Believe it or not, but stale or moldy food can be a tell-tale sign that your home is too humid. If your bread is developing mold spores at a fast rate (fresh bread will mold normally in about 5-7 days; bread with preservatives will last a little bit longer), it might be sucking up too much moisture in the air.

If you answered yes to any of these questions, a dehumidifier might be a good investment for you!

If you’re not sure where you should place a dehumidifier in your home or what type of unit would be best for you, we’re here to help! Few things are as important as the air you breathe.
