You might not be able to see it yet, but spring is just around the corner! For those of us here in West Michigan, that’s great news, and it also means it’s time to get your HVAC system ready for the warmer months ahead—especially if you get allergies.
Spring maintenance for your heating and cooling system is generally low-effort and can lead to vastly improved air quality in your home, better energy efficiency and lower utility bills, and preventative fixes if any of your components are showing signs of damage or failure. But how do you get your HVAC system ready for spring?
Here’s what you should do:
Clean Around Your Outdoor Unit
During the long cold winter months, materials like leaf clutter, trash, dirt, and other debris can often find their way around or onto your condenser unit, the cube-looking HVAC component located outside your home. Take time to clean up around the unit so all airflow is kept clear for maximum efficiency and reliability, and watch out for any signs of burrowing or animal activity nearby.
Wash the Air Conditioner Outside
The outdoor unit needs to breathe to efficiently exchange heat. Get the garden hose out and spray the fins down thoroughly to wash the old dogwood fluff and other lint and debris out of it. Your air conditioner and electric bills will thank you.
Change Your Home’s Air Filter
Your home breathes, and after a long winter cooped up, the various airways inside your home can get pretty dirty. Start your maintenance by changing your air filter, which should be changed every month if you have a 1” filter or a little longer for thicker filters for average West Michigan homes. If you have a “busy” household (multiple family members who are in and out all day long, or have pets) we encourage you to be even more conscious of the filter changes.
Program or Upgrade Your Thermostat
Programmable thermostats are highly recommended. They make it much more convenient to manage your home temperatures and save tremendous amounts of energy while doing so. Take time to change your settings to keep your home comfortable as temperatures begin to swing back and forth between hot and cold in the coming spring months.
Schedule a Spring Tune-Up
Scheduling regular maintenance with a professional HVAC technician is the single most important step you can take to ensure the proper performance and lifespan of your HVAC system components. At Baumann & Degroot we offer the best, most affordable heating and cooling products and servicing in West Michigan, with expert work performed by highly trained and respected technicians.
Schedule an estimate for a new air conditioner
The average life expectancy of an air conditioning system is 18 years.Coupled with the phase out of R22 refrigerant by the government, it may be in your best interest financially to be proactive with the replacement of your old system. A 20-year-old air conditioner could very easily be half as efficient as a new air conditioner, costing you comfort, stress, and high electric bills.
